Talk by Haakon Faste: Open Design: Innovation Education as an Altruistic Infrastructure
Bio:Haakon Faste is Assistant Professor of the Practice in the HCI Institute. A former leader of IDEO’s Software Experiences design practice, he has led design strategy, implementation, technology innovation and IP strategy on creative projects for some of the world’s most innovative corporations including Toyota, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Intel and Cisco Systems.
Abstract:This talk describes the importance of design-driven research to human-computer interaction, focusing particularly on the development of human-centered innovation and learning communities. The long term goals of this research direction are twofold: (1) to support and enable the improved education of leaders in design who are willing and able to take the necessary risks to overcome important local and global challenges; and (2) to build collaborative tools that demonstrate similar leadership across distributed teams and organizations (e.g. systems for idea management, crowdsourcing, open innovation, etc.). At both levels, the individual and the social, design research will be increasingly central to the infrastructures of civic life.
