The 7 Stories project, developed by M-ITI researchers, is going to be exhibited in the DEEP DESIGN: Pace, Place, and Personhood exhibition in Detroit, US, this friday 15th of January 2016.
Deep Design: Pace, Place and Personhood is an international exhibition of new multimedia designs, n Detroit, in the Elaine L. Jacobs gallery, at the Wayne State university campus, open to the public from the 15th to the 25th of March 2016. This exhibition is presented by the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and History and the Elaine L. Jacob gallery, and gathers projects from designers, architects and urbanists, who stand out for their creativity and for challenging the way how design is done today.
The project 7 Stories was part of the Madeira Live, and was led by M-ITI, in partnership with NOS Madeira, Madeira Tecnopolo and the Carnegie Mellon University.
The 7 Stories project associates new technologies with the dissemination of Madeiran old stories and traditions, and consists of a mobile application. This software works in smartphones, and uses GPS and visual markers to put video and multimedia content in open spaces. With this software, the user’s smartphone vibrates every time he/she passes by a place associated with a story, and receives an indication to search for a marker (consisting of a small image attached to a wall). Then, the user has to point his smartphone to the marker, and automatically receives the video with the story. Each story is related to the place that the user is.
The innovative approach based on interactive storytelling and content aware narratives, of 7 Stories, was successfully demonstrated in the region of Madeira, with the Santa Maria Stories. This action captured and exposed the rich oral culture and traditions of Madeira, for a large audience, with a particular focus on tourists. This successful project is the result of the international partnership with Carnegie Mellon University. This project increased M-ITI’s innovativation skills, and is already contributing to the improvement of the tourists user experience in Madeira.
This research work was headed by Professor Valentina Nisi, and developed during the master in Computer Engineering of the researcher Mara Dionisio.
